We start with a roundup of rumours about Premier League sides. Manchester City have started to build their squad after the defeat at the hands of United in the League Cup. Tottenham have beaten West Ham to the signature of former Chelsea midfielder Eidur Gudjohnsen. The football rumour market is rife with speculation even though the transfer window is more than a month away. All major clubs are looking for reinforcements in January.

Chelsea are battling with Real Madrid for the signature of German international Frank Ribery. A fee of £45m is being talked about. On the other hand, Bayern have revealed that they had rejected a whopping £70m from Chelsea in the summer for Ribery. The Blues are also in the hunt for Sergio Aguero. Atletico Madrid though have been tight-lipped regarding this matter.

Liverpool are looking for reinforcements in the attacking department in order to save their stuttering Premier League campaign. They are looking to bring former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy on loan from Real Madrid.

Manchester United are expressing interest in two of England’s rising stars. They are expected to make bids for West Ham striker Carlton Cole and Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell in January.

Their neighbours, Manchester City, on the other hand are going continental. They have their sights set on AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso. They have slight relief though, with the knowledge that Barcelona have cooled their interests over Robinho. The Catalan giants have instead turned their attention towards David Silva of Valencia.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is trying to manufacture a loan deal for Ben Foster as his first choice goalkeeper Craig Gordon is out with a broken arm. Also, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is keen on Swansea captain Ashley Williams and Honduras striker Roger Rojas.

A lot is happening in terms of a managerial merry-go-round too. Argentina want Guus Hiddidnk to take over from Diego Maradona after Russia failed to make it to the World Cup. And, last but not the least, Alan Shearer could take over at Sheffield United if current manager Kevin Blackwell is sacked.

With the transfer deadline behind us, we will take a look at some of the obscure moves that took place on deadline day and also at those which failed at the last moment. There was lot of talk about a possible swap deal between David Bentley and Martin Petrov. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy pulled the plug on the deal after it appeared that Manchester City only wanted to loan Bentley for a year. City defender Richard Dunne’s move was completed 24-hours after the window closed, when his paperwork was ratified by the Football League.

There’s trouble brewing at Middlesbrough too. Middlesbrough insist that striker Alfonso Alves remains their player despite an announcement on the website of Qatari side Al-Sadd that he has signed a three-year deal to play for them. The deadlock is yet to be broken. Spartak Moscow pulled out of the deal to sign Roman Pavlyuchenko after Spurs demanded a staggering £17.6 m for the Russian. West Ham’s search for strikers continues even after the window. They are tracking free agent Mark Viduka after they failed to sign Manchester City’s Benjani – apparently due to their inability to track down his agent. Reports also suggest that Arsenal forward Nicklas Bendtner rejected offers from Barcelona, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich to sign a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.

Elsewhere, a lot of loan deals went through on the final day. David Nugent joined Burnley on loan from Pompey while Ivan Klasnic signed for Bolton from French club Nantes for six months. Versatile midfielder Teemu Tainio joine Birmigham on a season long loan from Sunderland.

Starting off with news from the Barclays Premier League, Sunderland have signed Marseille’s Albanian midfielder Lorik Cana for a fee around £5 million. He becomes Steve Bruce’s third new recruit at the Stadium of Light. But Bruce is set to lose midfielder Dean Whitehead who is reportedly close to a move to Stoke. Sunderland’s relegated rivals Newcastle United may lose their right back Habib Beye who is intent on moving to Hull City. Meanwhile, Spanish striker Diego Tristan has chosen to return to La Liga. He has joined newly promoted side Cadiz after a one-year spell at West Ham United. Fulham have had their third bid for Jonathan Greening rejected by West Bromwich Albion.

In Spain, Real Zaragoza have signed Colombian midfielder Abel Aguilar and goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo on a year-long loan deal. Napoli have also completed the signing of goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis from Sevilla. Meanwhile, the biggest news coming out of Spain is that Inter Milan and Barcelona have reached an agreement over the swap deal of Eto’o and Ibrahimovic. Barcelona are also close to completing the signing of Palmerias youngster Kerrison. But he will be immediately loaned out to either Ajax or Porto to gain valuable first team experience. Real Madrid have used their buy back clause to re-sign Esteban Granero from Getafe. And finally, Espanyol right-back Steve Finnan could make a return to the Premier League. With Real Madrid setting the benchmark for big money transfer deals this summer, quite a few deals with “obscene money” involved are expected to go through in the coming weeks. Real Madrid themselves have stepped up the pursuit for Frank Ribery. Zinedine Zidane, who is an adviser to Madrid commented – “I am for Ribery coming to Madrid and I will do everything to make that happen”. Inter Milan have thundered that they will sell their star striker Ibrahimovic only for 80 million pounds, as they believe that his value is no less than Ronaldo or Kaka. Samuel Eto’o will bag a huge paycheck if he transfers to Eastlands, with figures of 192,000 pound weekly salary after tax being reported in the media. Javier Mascherano could still make a move to the Catalan giants but Liverpool are holding out for 45 million pounds, which would be the highest fee paid ever for a defensive midfielder. Also, rumours about Robinho going on loan to Barcelona have been squashed by City executive Gary Cook – “The story is completely without foundation.”

Coming back to some not so larger than life transfers. Aston Villa look to Tom Huddlestone as Gareth Barry’s replacement. Nigel Reo-Coker will be offered to Tottenham as part of an exchange deal. Andrea Pirlo has welcomed a move to Chelsea. He was quoted as saying – “Perhaps it’s possible that I could join (Blues boss Carlo) Ancelotti. Maybe it’s time for a new chapter in my career.” Bayern Munich seem to have won their battle to sign Jose Bosingwa from English Cup champions Chelsea. Thomas Vermaelen is set to seal a 10 million pound switch to Arsenal. And finally in a deal that would get tongues wagging, Manchester United are poised to make an approach for Arsenal forward Robin van Persie. van Persie has been frustrated with the lack of trophies at Arsenal and fancies United as a good career move.
